US Navy Body Fat Calculator

Estimate body fat percentage using the Hodgdon-Beckett circumference method, validated within ±3–4% of laboratory methods.

  • The US Navy method uses simple circumference measurements (neck, waist, and optionally hip) along with height to estimate body fat percentage.

  • The Hodgdon-Beckett (1984) formula has been validated within ±3–4% of hydrostatic weighing, a laboratory reference method.

  • Gender-specific formulas account for differences in fat distribution — female calculations require an additional hip measurement.

  • Results are categorized using neutral descriptive ranges (essential, athletic, fitness, average, above average) rather than clinical terminology.

  • Consistent measurement technique is key — small variations in tape placement can shift results by 1–2%.

  • This tool is for personal tracking and informational purposes. It is not a substitute for professional body composition assessment.

Measurement Guidelines

Accurate results depend on consistent measurement technique. Here are the standard measurement sites:

Neck

Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple). The tape should slope slightly downward at the front. Do not flare the neck muscles.

Waist (Male)

Measure horizontally at navel level, after a normal exhale. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin.

Waist (Female)

Measure at the narrowest point of the torso (natural waistline), after a normal exhale.

Hips (Female Only)

Measure at the widest horizontal point of the buttocks when viewed from the side.

Understanding the Categories

Body fat categories in this calculator use neutral, descriptive labels based on widely-referenced ranges. These categories are for personal awareness and are not clinical assessments. For context on how body fat relates to other body composition metrics, try our Reverse BMI Calculator or the BMI Calculator.

CategoryMale RangeFemale Range

Essential range2–5%10–13%

Athletic range6–13%14–20%

Fitness range14–17%21–24%

Average range18–24%25–31%

Above average range25%+32%+

If you know your body fat percentage, you can use it to calculate your lean body mass

Accuracy and Limitations

The Navy method has been validated against hydrostatic (underwater) weighing with an accuracy of ±3–4 percentage points. While not as precise as DEXA scanning or air displacement plethysmography, the Navy method requires no special equipment beyond a flexible tape measure.

Accuracy can decrease for individuals with unusual body proportions, very high muscle mass, or very low body fat levels. For tracking changes over time, consistency in measurement technique matters more than absolute accuracy.
